Press Release: “Real Surreal” Public Art Competition

“Real Surreal” Public Art Competition Exhibit | Naperville Art League and Gallery | March 19 – April 13, 2019 | Reception March 24, 2019 from 2-4pm, open to the public.

Naperville, Ill. (February 26, 2019) — Once a year the Naperville Art League hosts a Public Art Competition intended to welcome community members and encourage involvement in the arts. The 16th annual Public Art Competition titled “Real Surreal” invites interested artists to submit their original artwork by Wednesday, March 13.

All accepted entries will be exhibited at the Naperville Fine Art Center and Gallery located at 508 N. Center St. Naperville, IL, from March 19 through April 13. The Artists’ Reception and Award Ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 24 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

The competition entry form can be found on the NAL website or a copy may be picked up at the gallery. Entries must be accompanied by an artist’s statement consisting of at least 100 words. High school and college age adults are elligible to enter. Two 2D and two 3D categories are available.

Application fee is $25, for Naperville Art League members the fee is $15. Prizes: Best of Show Award $350, Awards of Excellence $100, and Honorable Mentions will receive a ribbon. All award winners will be recognized in a press release on the NAL website.

Artist and activist Ariana Poe will be exhibiting her surrealist acrylic on canvas piece titled “Extinction”, “I created this piece to bring attention to the fact that we share ecosystems with so many species, many of which will be extinct in 2019. Our quality of life and survival as the human species is closely linked to the survival and health of our vulnerable ecosystem” said Ariana, “As a society we need to prioritize being kind to the environment, and in turn we will also be doing ourselves a kindness by prolonging our own existence.”

The Naperville Art League will host a food drive throughout the show, to benefit Loaves and Fishes Community Services who provide food and services to more than 2,700 Naperville and DuPage County families each month. Nonperishable food items may be brought to the gallery throughout the show.
